Healthy and sustainably fed piglets

Sustainable sourcing of raw materials is one of our ambitions in our sustainability programme. We must source materials that are not derived from deforestation and have a lower environmental footprint. Replacing soy with a relatively high environmental impact could be one of the solutions. Discover our study conducted at the PigFarm on alternative protein sources.

Protein sources in animal feed

One of the most used protein sources in the animal feed industry is soy. Soy is commonly imported from outside the EU. Peas and sweet lupines are also important protein sources in animal feed and can be produced within Europe. That is why it is interesting to look at alternative protein sources to diversify our sourcing.

Research for a good fit

First, we have to identify if it’s possible to partly replace soy with peas and lupines in the weaner and rearing diets of piglets. Major indicators are the performance and digestibility of these new protein sources in the first five weeks after weaning. Two trials were conducted at the Denkavit Research & Innovation center. The first trial was conducted with 96 piglets. The performance and nutrient digestibility in the second and fifth week after weaning were measured for a standard diet with soybean meal or sweet lupines. The second trial was conducted with 393 piglets. The performance of weaner and rearing piglets either fed a conventional diet with soy or a diet where soy was partly replaced by either peas or sweet lupines were followed.

Promising results

In both trials, the feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio did not differ significantly between the treatment groups. The results of the study were conclusive. These trials show that peas and lupines can partly replace soy in weaner and rearing diets without compromising performance.

A diverse diet for healthy piglets and happy farmers

We think it is important to diversify protein sources in feed. Not only for environmental reasons but also for animal health in the digestive process and taking into account farmers’ financial position. As Denkavit we are looking for the most suitable solutions to diversify our supply of protein sources for animal feed. The aim is to continue our work and studies by looking for the best solutions to offer products made from different raw materials. Denkavit believes in sustainable, responsible and accessible sourcing.
